Refusing To Acknowledge The Facts of ADD/ADHD Medications
ReThinking reWired Feb 9,2015
I was recently quite disappointed when doing a pre-interview with Eric Tivers from a podcast called reWired, for helping individuals deal with ADD/ADHD. He refused to have me on his show as I talked about natural methods not needing medication that were 97% effective for overcoming their symptoms! His response was
“When someone says there is a natural way or another way other than medications, I think they are saying I am bad and wrong for what I am doing.” I told him this was not about him and I was not implying anything of the sort I thought he was providing insights and choices to his listeners and I wanted to offer them an alternative should they decide to want another way . I even promised him not to mention any of the research which says that not only do these medications not work in the long term, they actually made matters worse! All I wanted was to share this knowledge and let reasoning minds discover what’s best for themselves.
Eric took offense of my sharing these facts. He proceeded to tell me how the most significant long term study according on this subject known as the MTA study, clearly showed medications were better than either any therapeutic or training intervention. He quoted this study to me 4 different times to make his point.
This I found quite interesting. I knew how the co-author of the MTA study, Professor William Pelham, of the University at Buffalo says: “I think that
we exaggerated the beneficial impact of medication in the first study….
there were no beneficial effects – none.” The actual conclusion from the The MTA Cooperative Group following up with the same study subjects showed how at the end of 36 months,
“Medication use was a significant marker not of beneficial outcome, but of deterioration. That is, participants using medication in the 24-to-36 month period actually showed increased symptomatology during that interval relative to those not taking medication.” Medicated children were also slightly smaller, and had higher delinquency scores. At end of six years, medication use was “
associated with worse hyperactivity-impulsivity and oppositional defiant disorder symptoms,” and with greater “
overall functional impairment”!
Eric refused to accept this despite me giving him the specific sites and other long term studies which found similar results. He ignored the facts that these drugs cause 40% of their users to experience negative “side effects” like anxiety, insomnia, depression and even suicide! He refused to even consider the good sense to at least consider and try something new and without a need to take drugs first to avoid these dangers. When I pointed out how my approach developed with 15 years of research was aligned to the main focus of most of the world except the USA (which uses 85% of the world ADD/ADHD drugs!) again he rejected any possibility of even opening his mind as all he felt “I take these drugs because I have ADHD and they help me.”
Later I researched Eric and found he had a vested interest to keep people caught in this wrong diagnosis as he had an ADHD/ADD coaching business which caters to people with his beliefs. And like many pharmaceutical companies and doctors who run prescription factories he didn’t want to do anything to upset any future business from these clients! As I have shared with readers over the past 15 years many doctors receive direct and indirect money from the drug companies to promote their drugs. They receive stipends for “research: that could be $10,00 to $100,000, free trips to luxurious locations for “conferences” while golfing and being wined and dined by pharmaceutical reps. The recent report on the John Olivers HBO show
”Last Week, Tonight” did an excellent report on this. I suggest EVERY person taking these drugs or considering them watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQZ2UeOTO3I
